Logistics For Hikers – Getting to the 50K

The 50K starts next to the parking lot at Whites Ferry (24801 Whites Ferry Rd, Dickerson, MD) off River Rd in Montgomery County, MD. Options for getting there include getting a ride from someone or taking the ODH shuttle from the Shady Grove Metro station. To meet the shuttle, you can take the Metro, get a ride, or drive to that station.

Logistical Notes:

  1. Hikers should not drive themselves to Whites Ferry. That parking lot closes at night, so you may not be able to recover your car then. Moreover, because it is out of the way on back roads, it will be very difficult for you to get a carpool ride to return there. Finally, because the Metro is close to I-270, the drive from the end point of the hike to the Metro is much shorter and faster, and the drive from that statio to wherever you are going is also very likely to be faster.

  2. To drive to the Shady Grove station, see directions. Parking is free there on the weekends. To take the Metro to Shady Grove, see www.wmata.com for information about schedule and cost. The ODH return shuttle can take you from the hike’s end point back to this station.

  3. The Whites Ferry parking lot may be crowded and there may be traffic congestion in the entrance road. Do not congregate in the lot, but on adjacent grassy areas. Watch for vehicles.
